Topic: How do you make this sound? |

I just cannot figure out how to make this sound. It seems like you never hear it anymore but its cool. At the end of the first verse the steeler does it and at the end of the solo. Looks like he is doing a palm harmonic and maybe vamping on the volume pedal, but not sure. Its the sound "whooop whooop whooooeee"
Two more observations: Hank Thompson used a thumb pick and how about those shotgun cuffs on the steeler!

If I want to do this let's say in the key of C I would start on the 7th fret no pedals and do a palm harmonic 12 frets up strumming 4,5,6 strings. When you strum them swell the volume pedal full off to full on for the first whoop then while sustaining swell full off to full on for the next whoop then swell full off to full on again while sustaining and slide the bar to the 8th fret to complete. It's all timming.

| Junior Brown played that same sound on a duet he recorded with Hank Thompson called "Gotta Sell Them Chickens". I don't know how he did it on the guitsteel, but it looked like he was moving the bar up two or three frets while playing the high strings. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10 |

Thanks for the replys. I am going to play with this tonight and try to get that same sound. There is another funky sound thats real deep sounding and strange. I will see if I can find a clip with it. Real trick sound, I think this same guy does it with Hank. Anyone know who this is?

It is cool when you pull it off. Volume pedal timing is what makes it work. You'll get it.
