I love this answer to what a pedal steel is:
quote:
Tania Boyer:"I would say that maybe it has something to do with a pedal and something made out of steel...."
I gradiated from high school using nothing but answers like that !

Bob, ya' gotta' give her some credit....she knew that it had to be used in Hawaiian style music.
Now I know that Ray Montee would have flunked her, by I'm sorta' impressed. |

my favorite is when someone calls it the steel pedal, or steel petal...do i correct them or let them go on thinking that is what it is called? i put some tracks donw on a friends cd and when she got the liner notes done, it was called a petal steel, i'm not sure if it is a typo or not. it looks like a big cheese slicer but sounds like an electric slide whistle... |

Last weekend I had a sound man tell me to "give me a level on that pedal thing"....
but most of the times I just get compliments on the "great slide guitar", with an occasional "awsome keyboard playing man".
.....so much work left for us to do...

Ya can't say they don't have a clue. But that's about all they have, bless their hearts. The best one I ever got was a compliment on my "xylophone" playing. Then there was the time the drunk offered to help me carry my equipment out at closing time. He picked up my pedal steel in its case and grunted, "Man, this is heavy, what's in it?" When I told him a steel guitar, he complained, "Why do they have to make it out of steel?" |

I once overheard a young boy say to his mother after a show, "Hey Mom, there's the guy who plays the 'slide piano'!"...
Which I thought was pretty clever on his part....I've used that many times since.

I just always tell them I'm playing an electric table.Sure does save a lot of time trying to explain what it really is and how it works. |

Pedal steel isn't the only instrument with name recognition problems. When I tell people I've taken up the marimba, I get the same blank stare.
Funny, but I can't remember ever not knowing what a pedal steel or a marimba was. |

I was booked to add some overdubs on a 'project' many years ago. The lady who paid me afterwards told me she'd enjoyed my contribution very much, and asked what the instrument was called.
I must have spoken a little indistinctly, 'cause when I received a copy in the mail some weeks later, my credit on the sleeve read:
'Roger Rettig - pedestal'
I've been trying to get back up there ever since.
