If you have internet you can learn from the best steel guitar teacher in the world!

I just have a laptop, nothing fancy, Been taking lessons for a couple of years. He is one of the most talented, experienced players out there. Several folks here highly recommend him.

It also helps to understand your intended objectives...what style do you most want to learn? Country, Hawaiian, blues, etc.?

I have a lot of experience with distance learning (Skype, and more often, Google Video Chat/Hangouts) and so I have few reservations recommending that. Took five years of Indian classical lessons that way, and now hoping to start learning Hawaiian steel next year. Technology is pretty cool in what it allows these days!

Orville Johnson teaches on Tuesdays at Dusty Strings in Seattle. Don't know if he does skype but he's good on all the lap steels acoustical and electric as well as Spanish guitars. Contact him thru his website, Dusty Strings or thru the forum. Good man.

Hey Chris, I'm just down the road in Burlington, be happy to pass along a couple of my ole beginning books if you'd like them. I'm certainly not qualified for full on lessons but would be happy to informally pass along what I've picked up over last few years.
