Hi all. Anyone know of a tuning machine with a higher ratio that will sub for a Sperzel on a Carter?

I have the Gotoh 510 tuners on an archtop with a 22:1 ratio which are near on perfect.
The Sperzel's are 12:1 and are really touchy on the heavier strings.
I doubt the Gotoh's will fit because they have that locating tab and screw. Cheers.

Thanks for the reply Erv.
The main problem is space on the peghead so machines with locating tags won't fit.
Schaller are the only ones on Stew-Mac site that don't have the tag but they're only 16:1 and at AUD$240 for a set of 12 there's no real advantage.
It seems strange with all the advancements in pedal steel that tuning machines have been overlooked.
Machines with a 22:1 ratio just glide the string into tune so easily and accurately.

Graph Tech makes tuners with a wide range of ratios but I'm not sure they'll fit pedal steel tuning heads.

I've emailed them a couple of times and haven't gotten a response. The Schallers on my Zum are very tight and I'd replace them in a heartbeat if these Graph Tech ones would work.

John, I've just checked the size of the Graph Tech and where as the body size is close, about 2mm longer, the shaft to body measurement is about 6mm too long. So impossible for the 5th and 6th string placement.Plus I don't know whether they sell individual machines. Thanks for your interest.

Further, Grover sell a mini machine for pedal steel with similar dimensions to the Sperzel.
However there is no information on the gear ratio. I've sent an email and am waiting on a reply.

Thanks, Colin. The search goes on. I've disassembled and lubed all 12 machines on my S-12 Zumsteel guitar. They're a special design that eliminates the side screw found on standard guitar machine heads. It's odd since I have several standard guitars with Schallers that work just fine. I'd like to have the finer gear ratios for the lower strings. Pedal steel guitars aren't important to parts manufacturers since they are a small portion of the business.

Kluson have some new 19:1 models, one of them looks nice and should fit a pedal steel; no attachment screw.

The Fender six-in-a-line machines might work. I'd need six left and six right--not sure they're available.

Grover's won't work, only 14:1.
