Here’s a tab for a lazy Sunday.
A6 tuning in the original key. OK for C6 with high G but if you regular C6 folks want, it’s just a couple of tweaks to get to A6, as I’m sure you know. from vanilla C6 (ECAGECAG) just tune Cs up to C# and Gs down to F# … and hey presto! You’re on the A Train! … and you can play in the original key with this tab.
The B section can go up the octave if you want, of course. Might need to tweak it a bit for that.
The Paul Desmond solo is below. A bit of a rush job so I am sure that the tab could be refined, but it’s something.
Here is the audio, and with Youtube these days, you can even slow it down to half speed in the ‘settings’ menu.

Cudos, Guy! I'm a diehard Desmond fan and this is certainly a Desmond classic. Thanks, well done! When Take Five came out it was a revelation to play in 5/4 time. Now, every high school band can do it. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Quite a while since I listened to this.....That breathy saxophone of Paul Desmond is exquisite. We tend to squeeze the life out of recordings these days. This was the music that helped me count in 5/4....always much easier when you have a theme to memorise. I have played solo versions of this in the past on guitar. Having listened again to this I wish I hadn't! I have no doubt I will have a go at this on the Lap Steel..........it will not be pretty but it will be fun. Thanks Guy |

Desmond said he wanted his sax tone to "sound like a dry martini". |

In his notes to the LP "Paul Desmond Quartet Live he wrote in the liner notes:
Quote: |
"this album includes moments “which could justifiably be said to sound more like three dry martinis.†|

Thanks, gentlemen. Something to do on a Sunday afternoon after your football team has been pummelled into oblivion in the first half and your leaf blower has packed it in.
Andy, I followed that Jim Hall lick that you posted a while back and got to the 'Easy Living' album by Desmond. I love it. Just the trio and sax with no piano. I've always loved 'Bewitched' and that is a great version! |

The box set of the complete Hall & Desmond LPs is well worth having. I posted an arrangement a while back of Desmond's tune Wendy (recorded with Ed Bickert on guitar). He flew like an uncared bird when he left the confines of the Brubeck group. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Thanks, Doug.
Please feel free to email me for a better PDF copy of either of these.
Here is a tweak that I have made to bar 8 of the head. This seems to work better, using the same pattern at two positions that are two frets apart in bar 8/9 and then 9/10.
