Learning from other instruments and applying what you've learned to the steel is a nice way to get out of the musical ruts where we sometimes find ourselves.

Tony Rice's guitar playing on "Comeback to Old Santa Fe" is practically a textbook on how to accompany a vocalist. Despite his virtuoso abilities, Rice weaves a tapestry of perfectly timed fills, arpeggios and textural chords that totally keep the listener involved in the song - catching one's ear for their timing and taste - but never over played so that they take you out of the story of the song.

Tony repeatedly uses variations of one run on the F major chord that first appears at 0:28 secs into the song. I've transcribed it in Open D and C6th tunings. The first Open D version is my favorite - that leap from fret 3 to fret 12 really catches your ear. It's all basic major but his phrasing and interval choice makes it sound melodic and fresh and not like a run-of-the-mill scale or arpeggio run.

Hi Andy,
Lap Steel Guitar because I didn't know there were two.
Will need to take a look at that also.
Putting a book out is a lot more involved than most readers would ever guess.
Best wishes,
Andy
