Neck pickup: the pickup is mounted closest to the neck or last fret on the guitar neck.
Bridge pickup: the pickup is mounted nearer to the tail of the guitar or changer (bridge)of the guitar.
Neck mounted pickup will produce a mellower tone.
Bridge mounted pickup will produce a more treble (bite) tone.

Pickup made for neck position are usually less output meaning less windings and a lower ohm rating. Bridge pickups are normally higher output with more windings and a higher ohm rating.

Some Pedal steel guitars have 2 pups, but most of them I've seen, only have one, and it's usually mounted fairly close to the bridge. With 6-string guitar, I always found that if I was using one that didn't sound all that great, I could almost always get fairly good lead tone from the bridge pup - even on very very cheaply made guitars. I might switch to the bridge on a guitar like that to play rhythm accompaniment.
