Hey... it's not that kind of video! Surprised

"Penetration" is a 1960s surf guitar tune by the Pyramids. The tuning I'm using (high to low): D, C, Bb, A, G, F. I created the tuning specifically for this song. The song did not lay out well on the standard tunings so I retuned the strings to match the melody of the song. I posted a thread a while back about retuning strings to play certain songs. After I recorded the song I started to analyze the tuning, and I think it would be called Gm9/11. Hope you like it. Surfs up!

That tuning sounds like it would work for just about every surf tune ever..
Sounds great! I gotta try it, thanks Doug!

Excellent Doug. I love the fact that you play a lot of your music on a 6 string Lap Steel.

Thanks all. Yes, I like 6-string lap steels a lot. I like the challenge of working out arrangements on only six strings. Thanks for listening!

Very cool, Mr. B.

I agree with Mike that what Doug does with only six strings is truly amazing.

That old black Gibson Century-6 is one fine sounding instrument. Realizing that my opinion is indeed in the minority, every 6-string Gibson lap steel I have ever played* knocks the boobs off every 6-string Fender lap steel I've ever played. And they sell for considerably less money nowadays. Gibson lap steels are truly one of the few bargains in the vintage guitar market.

* With the notable exception of the Skylark, which was basically Gibson's answer to Fender's Champ. Skylarks are possibly the most overpriced 6-string lap steel in the vintage market, in my opinion.

I think the tuning is actually

Gmadd9/11

rather than Gm9/11

as there is no b7 as is crucial when suggesting a m9

Thanks for the positive comments. Regarding the Gibson Skylark, I once did a side by side comparison of a Skylark and my Century 6, and the Skylark had much less sustain. The notes died out quickly. Vintage guitar dealers ask sky high prices for the Skylark because the body is Korina wood, which is something special in the world of vintage Gibson guitars. The original Flying V and Explorer were Korina. And the Skylark has the same headstock Logo that was on the Flying V. Guitar collectors and dealers have driven the prices up, but the Skylark was Gibson's student model lap steel back in the day. Hence the fret numbers on the fretboard.

Stefan, wouldn't the F be the b7?

I retuned C6 up to this tuning. That means string 6 (C) has to go all the way up to F! And string 5 (E) has to go up to G. I use a .036 for the C, on a short scale lap steel. Tuning up to F was doable. If you're using a .038 you might want to change that string for this tuning.

Thanks, Larry, Erv, and others. Below is the "retune" from C6... if you're brave enough to tune that low C all the way up to F! Cool

Tab:
E ----> D
C
A ----> Bb (A#)
G ----> A
E ----> G
C ----> F

The backing track is on YouTube. The poster plays the song in the first half of the video, and the background track is in the second half of the video. Give it a try.

Love surf music on steel! Excellent playing and concept, Doug. Surf music seems to fit our instrument so well.

Here's an original Redd Volkaert surf tune called "Tubin" I always loved and thought was a natural for steel and - low behold - there's video of Cindy and Redd playing it:

That's an interesting original from Redd Volkaert. I've only heard him play faster/swing/jazz/chicken pickin', so this is kind of refreshing to hear. He's a Tele God, for sure. Cindy sounds great too. Long live surf guitar!

Someday I want to learn "Wonderful Land" by the Shadows. It's beautiful melody and it conjures up memories 1962, the beach, hot rods, space age, girls, stratocasters, etc. -----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1dmBUBu9P4

Thanks also for introducing me to this one, Doug. For some reason, I think I'm genetically pre-programmed to love that one to flat seven chord change you hear in surf and often, in Celtic music. I wish my own summer could have been endless.

Just perfect touch, tone and feel here, Doug.

I wonder if Penetration is an inversion of Pipeline. It sounds like it could be.

Anyway, this surf music fan enjoyed that!

Both songs are in a minor key, as a lot of surf instrumentals are. Many surf melodies are built on the harmonic minor scale and the Phrygian mode, which gives them an exotic, mysterious sound. By the way, Dick Dale, one of surf guitar's early pioneers was of Arab descent on his father's side. He heard quite a bit of middle-eastern music in his youth, and that no doubt played into his shaping of the surf guitar sound.
