What tuning and if possible, tab is there for the steel intro for Long Gone Lonesome Blues - Hank intro? Was this JB or DH?

It was Don.
Can't help with TAB but the guitar is playing most of it and the steel is really just harmonising on the last three notes of each phrase.

G# B G# - A C# A - G# B G# - F# A F# - E G#

Don would have used his regular "E6" tuning but is just as easy in C6 or A6.

I use A6 and play it using the notes on strings 3&4 14th fret, 2&3 12th fret and 3&4 12th fret. If you're using C6 with an E on top, you'll find the notes on strings 1 2 and 3 (3 frets lower).

Actually, he does play a lead in note on a few of those phrases but the above will pretty much get you there.

Here's Don's tuning.

He calls it E6, although that A on the bottom actually makes it something else. He mostly only used the top 6 strings (which is E6). I think he saw it as two tunings on one neck - E6 on the top 6 strings and A major on the bottom 3.

Andy, Jeff...If you play around with this "E6" tuning I just realized that strings 5 through 8 give you a real handy A major seventh chord and strings 4 through 8 give a full sounding A major ninth chord. Both of these chords can give you a nice, jazzy sounding ending to a tune or be used as a substitute chord during a tune.

I think Don Helms was on to something here.
