Anybody ever seen a guitar damaged in a fibre case?
I personally have had a cracked cabinet,a warped front board,and seen another cracked cabinet and a sprung changer...all steel guitars in hard cases. |

| I am sure there have been many guitars damaged by hard cases, I have seen a few, some by cases we built. This is why things have changed a little in my designs vs my dads. It is just my belief that a hard case with padding is the way to go. |

I have to apologize to both parties. I was just trying to make sure I was getting the best product for the 2 guitars I own. The weight of my current rig is getting too heavy and have never even seen fiber cases in person. So I was asking lots of questions. I am sorry it turned into a debate. Although these debates here on the forum are good for enlightening people about all the pros and cons but I could have been more discreet and less accusative.

Then Steve posted something that made it look like I was going behind his back thru a pm and talking trash about his product, which got deleted. I will never say anything about a persons product thru pm that I won't put right here on this post, that's why I have handled this matter thru post and not pms. In my opinion,your original PM was a big mistake...
Then you posted basically the same thing on here...
I would NEVER pm anyone and offer a negative opinion of someone
else's product...

| I still think my comments were misunderstood. All I said about fiber cases was they offered no structural support to the guitar.I never said your cases caused damage, show me where I did, Heck I said worse things about hard cases than fiber cases, even my own. Hard cases from the past could cause damage in a high impact. I have known this for a while now and have made improvements in the padding to help protect the guitar more. I have been upfront with what I said, never said your cases damaged guitars, did say I thought my new design was better than ALL others including my cases from the past, have apologized numerous times and won't comment on this again, unless I get thrown under the bus again for something I did not do. |

I have several Thomas cases. All are very good and well built cases. I am very pleased with the Thomas cases.
Thomas has most likely built more pedal steel cases than anyone else in the USA. Hard to find fault in the real numbers. Jimmie Hudson |

I'm with Michael - I have split Red Dirt cases and they have served me very well - certainly worth a look and Jason is a great guy to work with.

It will be a single case no splits..

My thought on split cases is to lighten the load. Split "road" cases although probably great cases are not lightening the load.
I built my own split cases from 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood. I don't know if its any lighter than 3/8" standard plywood but it is a stronger material.

Well I have to disagree Jack - my Red Dirt guitar body case is a lot easier to haul in and out of my truck without the pedal bar, legs and rods :-} !! I guess if you combine the weight of the two loaded cases your right though ....

I sell split cases made by Unitec to my specs. They build cases for several guitar builders and were the vendor for Carter Steel Guitar Co until Carter closed. I use their split cases. They are lightweight good cases at very reasonable price. They will protect a guitar under normal use but they are not as protective as some road cases would be in some kind of accident. A very good set of light weight cases at very affordable price.

No Michael, I don’t build the cases, They are built by Unitec in Ohio. The guitar rides in foam as did the Carter guitars and I block the case to fit the guitar. This is not an elaborate custom case, just a sensible set of split cases for the average use player for under $300.00 for the set. Here is a photo of a set of cases one of my guitars is riding in. I have changed to better handles. I now specify the spring loaded more comfortable handles.

| The original question has been answered, and split cases definitely lighten the load/cut down on awful overweight flight charges. In terms of traditional wooden carpet cases and Brand X cases, in my experience of a few years of touring and flights, I've replaced and/or repaired 3 wooden cases, and have yet to have any issue with Brand X, about 15 flights in-and I know which one I'd rather pick up. |
