Bing doesn't even come in till 1:25 into the song!
Here's an interesting excerpt from the book "Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams - The Early Years 1903 - 1940" by Gary Giddens that talks about the amazing success the song had and Bing's relationship with Hawaiian music and the steel guitar:

Yes, come to think of it, that is a brilliant arrangement. I enjoyed the description in the link--it is as if wandering in a tropical paradise we suddenly meet a familiar friend (Bing). I've heard this a hundred times and never thought of it that way.
BTW, a cd of Bing Crosby singing this and others can be had cheap on "My Favorite Hawaiian Songs". It is still a favorite of mine. Bing backed by a who's who of top notch Hawaiian musicians of the day...Lani and Dick McIntire, Bob Nichols, George Kainapau (the contralto obbligato mentioned in the book).
At a shop once I came across old sheet music for Sweet Leilani. To my surprise it was signed by Harry Owens. A nice addition to my collection . |

One of my favourite "Hawaiian" movies is Waikiki Wedding from 1937. Blue Hawaii, Sweet Leilani and Okolehau are standout numbers. I seem to recall Bing had to fight to get Sweet Leilani included.
Here's my go-to Dick McItyre version.

Being relatively new to the party, errr, lu'au, I discovered this tune within the last few weeks. It's taking shifts along with Sand, Waikiki Chickadee, and the entirety of the Tapa Room Tapes running through my head when I wake up at 3AM! Can't complain, if I'm going to have insomnia at least there's a nice soundtrack... |
