Had a great time in the shop last night with good friends Randy Beavers, Mike Bourque, Damir, and yours truly. In the house was a 1964 #6 wrap around, #1 Zum Hybrid, and the 2 Emmons lacquer guitars I just finished restoring. Both PPs and the Hybrid have chrome 705 pickups while the 64 had Emmons pickups in it.

Obviously Ruby is waiting for fret-boards to show up in the mail....

Randy decided to put some Klusons on his Hybrid along with the 705s for a test. We sat around and A/B'd these guitars, talked shop, had a lot of good laughs, and yes, drank a beer. (the puppies slept through the whole thing HA!)

The results were pretty great too. The Zum/PP test was very close indeed. I think the red PP (Ruby) had just a hair more mids but then again we are talking lacquer vs Mica too. With that being said it would hard to tell them apart with a blindfold test we all agreed.

The two Lacquer Emmons were pretty close too the difference being metal vs wood necks and of course the different style changers. As some of you know the Blue guitar belongs to Damir and the red guitar (Ruby) is headed to Florida in a few weeks to meet up with her new owner.

Too bad, Mike. Least you considered it. Did you guys notice any difference with the Klusons on the Hybrid? I'm always interested in Hybrid talk as I have one.

Randy said he noticed it big time but he also put some chrome 705s in there too. Hit Randy Beavers up and he will tell you the scoop

I ordered my Hybrid with the Gotoh(Kluson type)tuners and the headstock that is designed for them by BZ. The late great John Hughey turned me onto the idea when we talked about his Hybrid. I played my Hybrid guitar with the Gotoh/Kluson type headstocks for a while and then switched to the standard headstock with modern tuners. Well... the newer style tuners were definitely an improvement in terms of back-lash, and the guitar did sound great. I played it that way for a few years. About 6-8 months ago I switched back to the Kluson style tuners and headstocks. I like the way they sound a lot. Better to my ear IMHO.

Mike, I was wishing Mike Bourque would post some clips of the 64. I think he's the owner? Maybe not.

Enjoyed your clip. Thanks for sharing.
