I miss not going to Scotty's International Convention. So many of the people who attended, and those who played on the show are no longer with us. Sad in so many ways! Here is Hal Rugg playing a song he always played at Scotty's Convention.

I wonder if the reason that Hal liked to play that song (“I’m Down To My Last Cigarette”) was because he had an important part in writing it. Smile
I read somewhere that Hal had just finished a late-night recording session with Billy Walker, and while chatting with the other musicians in the studio parking lot, Hal said “Boys, it’s late, I’m tired, and darn it—I’m down to my last cigarette.”

Apparently Billy Walker thought that was a great song title, because soon he and Harlan Howard had written the song!

The only Billy Walker recording of the song I’ve heard did not have any audible steel guitar, but K.D. Lang had Hal out front and center in her great version…
