A group of co-workers never played together before. After a 2+ year hiatus of not playing out and being burned out.

Using a poor man's rig which performed well for me:

GFI Ultra, Roland Cube GX80, Zoom G2

OLP Electric guitar (legal knock off of Music Man Axis EVH designed), Roland Cube 60, Zoom G2.

Mike Johnson and Sonny Garrish influences.

I sure like the tone coming from that steel & amp. Was a little confused tho. One place seemed to indicate a Roland 80 GX amp was used & another place said Roland 60, or did I read it wrong? In any case those Roland Cubes are most often a preference of mine.

Thanks,

I used two amps. The Cube GX80 was for the steel and the cube 60 was for my electric guitar. In the past, I would use a Vegas 400, which is very heavy and that kind of power was unnecessary there. I have tried to use the Cube 60 for steel in the past and there is not enough headroom or bottom.

I have owned Nashville 112 amps and was not overly impressed with them. The knobs are exposed and I do not like the open back. I was pleasantly surprised how good the GX80 sounds for steel at a fraction of the cost of a 112.

The Zoom G2 is for delay and chorus on steel, no amp models.

The other Zoom G2 used with guitar was full amp modeling and effects.

GFIs are great low maintenance guitars, lighter than most, the factory is responsive. If I can't have a push pull, then this is the next best thing to me.

These people had not seen a pedal steel up close. Before we started playing, one of the teen daughters showed a real interest in it.

They had that reaction to my solo because they thought my only hobby was eating! It helps to manage expectations!

Often/mostly I use the Roland 80XL. It does a great job with my Steels. For tone I really like it with my MSA Uni. It ia excellent mated with my Stringmaster Quad. Got a wonderful compliment from a pro about the tone with the latter. Kudos to the Roland 80 series.
