In the past I tuned my 10 string lap steel to e9th. I am trying out the following E13 tuning

1. G#
2. F#
3. E
4. C#
5. B
6. G#
7. F#
8. E
9. D
10. B

I need help with the 4th string c#. I know it's a 6 note but which strings should I combine it with and how should I use it. Thank you so much. I just love this forum!

That's not a tuning I use...but the C# will go with the G# and E to make a C#m chord; with the F# and E to make a partial F#7 chord - works for minor too; with the D, F# and B to make a Bm maj7 chord; C# B and E make a partial C#m chord;

and the biggie, the C# with the E, B and G# makes an E6 or C#m7 chord.

That's the 10-string E13 tuning I use. It's Tom Morrell's tuning, except it has a low B instead of a very low E. Strings 5 through 10 are the same as E9 pedal steel guitar.

I've recorded four videos using this tuning:

If I just replaced my d# with a c# on the second string still be E13th and would it be practical?

1. F#
2. C#
3. G#
4. E
5. B
6. G#
7. F#
8. E
9. D
10. B

The C# is the 6th, so that wouldn't be a 13th tuning. It would, however, be identical to pedal E9.

Hey Brian I see why you swapped the G# around - you must be coming from a pedal steel background.

Maybe not my choice as it means on single string scale work you have to do some jumping as there aren't any pedals to change it so its in line with scale runs.

Yes a C# is what you need for it to be E13th

D# would make it M13 and a little less versatile for chords and single strings.

Correction M9

The 13th chord does include the 6th tone.

Misread it. Had the change going the other way.

Yup, that's a 13th.

I misread things all the time! Sometimes I respond to a statement without taking the time to read the entire thread for context. I'm trying to improve though!
