Just thinking this effects chain business through again. One thing worth mentioning is that a volume control (whether a pedal or a knob) will also change the level of distortion/drive.

If your chain is Guitar -> Volume -> Drive
You have the option of varying the amount of drive with the volume pedal, or getting full drive with the volume wide open. It is a little tricky getting the feel for this, and the cleanest tone you can get is not your normal clean.

If you have Guitar -> Drive -> Volume
You have full drive at all times at any volume level.

It is a bit inconvenient for steel players to set up their chain the second way, but that is how I prefer it. Ideally, having volume controls before and after the drive would be great.

I have my phaser before delay on my pedalboard. BUT I really like the sound of putting a phaser on the delayed signal when I split the signal with a delay into two amps. The dry signal is unaffected, while the delayed signal gets phased. It sounds pretty cool, but it's not something I want all the time. Give it a try and see what you think.
