Which pick-up do you guys with experience suggest for the Zum-Steel Encore? The single or the humbucker? Does one cater to a certain style of playing better than the other? For instance, is one better for fast picking as opposed to chords?

Hi, I run a TT10 single coil in mine and find it as good as anything out there

Is the TT10 one of the two pick-Up options Doug offers?

I am under the impression that the Truetone is one of the standard offerings. Since it's built to take the standard wide-mount form factor, if it's not the standard offer, I bet you could either order it as an extra cost option or order sans pickup and get one straight from Jerry.

Yeah, my recolection is the standard pick-up is the trutone, but there is also an option for the humbucker. I'm just wondering which is better and in what way. I'm sure the trutone is best for a certain sound, and the humbucker is best for a certain sound. But what sound?

They both sound somewhat similar tonewise, but the single coil has the crisper attack while the humbucker is more compressed. Most of us prefer the single coil sound but get the humbucker when the noise is an issue

Thanks Lane for your response.
So when you say the humbucker is more "compressed", could you elaborate. For instance, what type of scenario would you prefer a humbucker versus the tru-tone.
Thanks!

The biggest difference is in the early attack: the humbucker tends to suppress that sharp spike of a sharply struck note, developing more evenly. If I were to go back to a humbucker on E9th, I'd probably spend more time banging the strings off a curled-under fingernail to put more attack on the string.
That said, I slightly prefer the tone of my MSA with a Tonealigner humbucker in it to my Zum with the Truetone.
For most of the steel pickups out there, the discussion is largely nibbling around the edges.

Ahhh, I see what you mean. That is good info to know. I think I will probably go with the trutone. Thanks Lane!

Good choice. Had Doug put the Trutone on when he made mine (not a problem to him) Normal setting is 3.5mm down from the strings. If you find that too harsh to the ear at the top end (like me) 5mm down from strings is the way to go.
Heads up. Give the new Daddario NYXL strings a shot. I think you might be impressed. - happy pickin

Most steels sound better with a 5mm (if you lack a feeler gauge, that's three quarters stacked, and just barely pushing the strings up-3 quarters is 5.25mm)

Lane, does your 5mm rule apply for all pickups? Or just single coils?
