Dobro tone has come a long way since then - both from luthiers' knowledge and construction techniques and engineers knowledge of how to record the instrument -but Buddy's tone still sounds great to me - rich and full with a little bit of edge.

| Buddy on the Sho-Bud, my favorite tone of his. I believe that might by the same Sho-Bud that he sold to Pete Drake and that was used on many of Drake's classic recordings. |

Until now, I didn't even know those records existed. I like this one even better - pure, raw, no-gimmicks sound, just two incredibly gifted players!

The strange thing about it is that it came out in 1971, about seven years after Buddy left Sho-Bud and started his own company.
Anyway, he sounds so beautiful on the Sho-Bud! It's also my favorite tone of his. |

And for the bluegrass lovers, here's Shot Jackson backing up the Osborne Brothers on their LP from 1958. Dobro tone sounds ok to me. At the time dobroist Ricky Russell was in the band but Shot did the studio recording.
