Made a little video tonight comparing the sound of my rig (MSA Millennium through Roland 80XL) with and without the Li'l Izzy in line. See if you can tell which is which, and which sound you preferred... Feel free to post your guesses and observations below.

I think track #2 was with the Lil Izzy.

I've never tried a Lil Izzy, but I definitely noticed a slight difference in the samples. I'll vote for #1 being the Izzy.

Another vote for track 2. I use an Izzy, and I can hear the brighter and "punchier" tone, as well as the better string seperation in chords the Li'l Izzy gives. And I am the guy who ususally can not hear a difference between different pickups or the tone differences between guitars. If I am correct then it confirms what I've always said - the two things that make the biggest difference in my tone (besides replacing me with a real steel guitar player!) are the amp and the Li'l Izzy. If I am wrong, then perhaps I am just hearing what I expect to hear?

I hear a slight difference. I'm not going to guess which track uses the Izzy, I liked track 1 a bit more than track 2.

Number 2 seems to have just a little more string separation, and brightness.
I vote #2, and I am impressed with the Roland 80XL.

And the WINNER IS... #2... and all of us for hearing you play.... Pretty clear distinction even on my laptop... Gotta say though I like #1 too.... Great playing.

Another vote for #2, although #1 was quiet "acceptable" Wink.
Quick question Jim, did you adjust the amp differently for #2? My experience with the Izzy is that it gave great definition, especially to the lower strings, but pretty radically accentuated the high end. I'm not hearing that in your recording.
That Craig Baker was a clever fellow.

The amp settings were left untouched and are identical in both cases.

WOW...can't believe your getting those rich sounds out of a Roland!
I vote for #2...because of the clarity.
I use a L'Izzy, but not all the time...depends upon the pickup I'm using (I play a Sierra with inter-changeable pickups).

I don't really know what the L'Izzy is supposed to do, but I like #2 better. Smile Less 'clutter' or something, not that #1 is bad.

Jim was there effects used inline or on board? If not, that room sounds great.

Jim what VP are you using?... I use a Multi-Taper and a Rev Tube Pre-amp... I’ve been told that with these I don’t need the Li’l Izzy as they both have buffer’s built in... I loved it on the 1st Mullen I had, in fact I used 2 of them with that guitar... I have no idea what the pickup was as I was never able to identify it, but they made a huge positive change to that guitar... When I got my 2nd Mullen with Quad 705’s in it, my ears said I needed to take them off, so I never used them with that guitar, though when Mickey had it, he did... I haven’t tried it with my MSA and the 710 pickup, but maybe I should try that again.

Jim would you suggest any changes to ones amp settings when adding the Izzy in the chain?

I don't care which was which. You're execution is excellent on both cuts. Now, I regret parting with my Roland Cube 😂 Buddy would be proud.

Dale,
I am using a Goodrich pot pedal, standard model. I will answer your other question about tweaking the amp after I reveal which version was which.

Well, so far I'm the only one to vote for #1. Either I'm a genius or a total loser! Laughing

I think #2 has the Izzy, but I liked track #1 much more than #2. It was more punchy and musical, and didn't have that faint buzzy sound in the high freqs.

Your execution was masterful, Jim. Such a joy to watch and listen.
