Got this Danelectro, and it's a great little Amp!
Found it on Craigs List this weekend for just $60.00 and it's wonderful for it's small size and light weight.
Tone is good for my lap steel throughout it's range.
Does not break up until very high volume, and even then it's only a slight amount.
Can't do any better in the size and price range.
This is perfect for a road trip I'll be starting on Tuesday. Now I can make noise in all the motels we stay at!
I also found a great sounding Amp for my Mullen and others that I'd play at regular gigs called a "Strawberry Blond". I'd never heard of that brand. Posted it on the "Pedal Steel" Page a little while ago. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

Hi David,
Yes I was surprised at just how good it does sound.
Will be great for going to sit in with other bands in Saigon because I can bungee it onto the back of my motorbike and have the lap steel on a shoulder strap.
I think it will be loud enough, but won't know until I get home in October.

Be very gentle with the 1/4" input. It is mounted directly on the board and has a reputation for breaking. There is no fix, which is why Danelectro discontinued the amp.
I had one, used it for a few years & loved it. Unique, crunchy tone. Super lightweight. I'd put a mic in front of it and play gigs. But when mine broke, I looked up the problem on the web and it appeared to be a known problem with no solution.
That one pictured IS different from mine. Mine was an open back...never saw a closed back version. Just noticed yours says NiftySeventy. I had the NiftyFifty. |

I believe the "Nifty Seventy" was sold as a bass amp, hence the closed back. |

The "Strawberry Blond" is an amp made by SWR.
It was marketed as an acoustic amp.
I almost bought one for use with acoustic lap guitar but I bought a Marshall acoustic amp instead that I really like. |

A Danelectro Nifty Seventy came up on CL locally last week so I grabbed it.
I also have a Nifty Fifty, which I have always enjoyed using as a practice amp, with a reverb pedal.
I took the back off the Nifty Seventy and there was a very small 8" speaker with a very small magnet in there.
I happened to have a 10" guitar speaker laying around (black paper cone), so I eyed it up and sure enough it fit.
The Baffle is particle board, so I just screwed the original speaker screws right into the particle board (no-pilot hole drilled), and that 10" speaker is in there!
The original 8" says 4ohms on it.
The 10" I put in says 8ohms, but it is easily twice as loud, and has a way better treble end (It was originally marked as a Bass amp).
Also, this amp was missing one rubber-foot on the bottom.
I picked up two at the hardware store that are slightly bigger than original, so it looks like it is tilting backwards a little, which looks cool too
'Playing the two Dano's in stereo this morning with an Alesis Microverb II and Hilton Volume Pedal (my spare pedal now).
Sounds great!
I will use these two amps at home and at local living-room rehearsals and such
I am going to keep an eye out for an effecient 10" 4ohm speaker with an aluminum dust cap (that I hope I will get for free), in my travels

Hi Pete,
Thanks for the useful information.
Nine is a very fine little amp...
Still can't get over the idea that it only set me back $60.00
Now I see that there are two similar looking amps, the Fifty and the Seventy.
Can't comment on the Fifty, but my Seventy is to good.
I prefer the tone of this amp for my lap steel over the Peavey Nashville 112.
I'd use it more for my pedal steel if it had reverb.
Didn't know it was intended for bass, but I have used it with my Squire bass as well as for my Electric guitar. Works well for whatever I've used it for.
When I brought it here to Saigon where we have 220V electricity I took it to a local repair shop and they changed it over of $8.00 so it works right out of the wall.
No hum, no nothing no problems. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html
