I saw Clint last August. NO STEEL... Keyboard player was covering the parts.
Maybe Clint has realized the error of his ways since??? He put on a great show otherwise. |

Don I would definetly go. I never will be able to see him perform, I guess it's there's no market here for him. With or without steel.

Clint has been performing without a steel guitar for years now, Jeff Paterson (?) was his steel player, and he was a great player too, I met him while he was working at the Bobbe Seymours store in Hendersonville, often acts would drop steel guitar and replace it with keyboard, I am not interested in shows like that so I don't go , but YMMV

He is scheduled to be in Evans/Augusta Ga in a few weeks, may go, my son works with the sound Co. that does most of the area venues, may go anyway. BF

It's kinda funny, I met Jeff a few times in Nashville, he told me of the beginnings of Clint's career. I even attended a small "CLINT" show with Jeff , then we walked Broadway afterwards. Nice guy, very social.
According to Jeff, in the beginning Clint used the band that Jeff was part of along with guitar player Hayden Nicholas . Hayden and Clint became musical partners over the years and developed Clints "sound" which included some very nice Steel guitar playing by Jeff on pretty much all of his songs.
Today ? NOT. 
"My career is set I don't need no stinkin' Steel guitar" !
To paraphrase...
Imagine for a moment if Alan Jackson toured without a Steel ? No we can't, and no he would not.

Well, the decision is now out of my hands, I'll be at a 2nd birthday party for our granddaughter. I might add that this little girl loves to stand in front of the steel as I practice, and she grabs my bar hand and slides it up and down the fretboard and giggles at the change in the sound. I will certainly try to build on this interest as she gets older.  |

Don yes, that's more important. I wish I had a family also. For compensation you may want to get "D'electrified" from him, it's a good album.

| Jeff Peterson played steel with Clint starting in the late eighties and was part of the band into the 90s and into the 2000s. He plays Emmons guitars, although, in Clint's first video, "Better Man", and second video, "Killin' Time", he played an EMCI steel |

seen him last month at our state fair here in Wisconsin,
band was tight,,disappointed in lack of steel,,with his songs its almost like not having a banjo in a bluegrass band,,

Okay, this thread is kinda related to another in the forum about steel getting "pushed out". I am curious, if you or anyone else has some first hand insight, on the real reason why large game like CB would decide not to have a steel player in his road band. Surely he could pick just about anyone that wanted to play. |

Clint Black is not a "big game" any longer, he was in the 80's which is long gone, he had no hits on the radio in the long time, he is not on TV or anywhere close to a "big game" today ... he is playing casinos and smaller venues, and probably dropping musicians to save money.... I have not heard Clint Black song on country radio in decades... from that 80's new traditionalists generation, George Strait was the one who's carrier lived the longest, probably because he stayed in Texas ... todays stars don't care for or need steel guitar, and the old ones can't no longer afford it...

that I wouldn't know, his last hit was "Killin Time" in the 90's, and I don't remember any other big hits after that one.... he can still make decent living playing music, but I wouldn't consider him a "big game" ... however I like country music, and bands with fiddles and steel guitars, so his show is not something I'd pay to go see, I probably wouldn't go even if it was free, I just don't care for it, I'd rather go see ZZ Top, at least they have a steel guitar lol....

Always liked his music and probably would have given in and gone to it anyway if scheduling had permitted. But a big arena, it's NOT. |

Regarding big game, suffice it to say there isn't a real country music fan out there that doesn't know who Clint Black is, and I would guess there aren't many players out there that wouldn't tour with him if they could. Most country artists who have the kind of success he did have a 5 or maybe 10 year run when their songs become hits. Then they go on the casino/county fair circuit. Better Man and Killin Time were the ones he broke through with, but they were most definitely not his last songs to go high on the charts.
So, any other ideas? Maybe he just doesn't like steel anymore. |

Of course, Barry.
Okay, that's two for the financials. Not like he needs the money or doesn't have it, so it must be a philosophical thing too. I guess taking a chance on breaking even or losing money on a tour because there's one more guy to pay just doesn't feel right no matter how secure your life is, or how much you want to put on the best show you can, or just because you want to have some fun with your work.
Maybe there is no steel on his recent recordings? Most artists tour just to promote the new album. |
