Godspeed Goldy.

According to Goldy, John Kay fired the whole band, changed the name to John Kay and Steppenwolf.
He then hired replacements and took the cash.

Goldy was famous for his distorted organ sound in the iconic Mars Bonfire song Born To Be Wild first recorded and released by Steppenwolf, the recording session of which started out by the roadies dropping his Lowrey organ off a loading dock and then the horn upper driver in his Leslie blew up so he had a tech bypass the crossover and ran the lower bass rotor full range.

The firing and taking the cash is not the way John Kay explains it, Bye Bye Goldy.
