I just got delivery of my Carter D-10 and couldnt be happier with the way is sounds.
It looks great too, black with chrome all over the area where my fingers pick the strings.
The problem is Im having trouble seeing the top 5 strings.
Anyone else encounter this problem?
Solutions?

| Just move your picking hand to the left, until you are able to the the entire pickup. It will sound better too. |

Thanks Bill. Ive always kind of rested my palm on the changer so my picking is close to the changer too. But now that I have a double neck I can rest my hand anywhere on the inside neck so I will start playing more to the left. You're right, it sounds better  |

Get a box of assorted-colored file cards. Switch cards under the strings till you get a color that the strings stand out on. Cut to size needed. Carry a selection of colors with you for different lighting situations.
I learned this trick setting up lathe bits with different light sources. Happy Steelin. |

Just a hunch, but are you using a proper steel seat?
The pack-a-seat types are the correct height for playing.
I set up a practice steel in my porch recently and when I used a kitchen chair, I was too low and could not see the first few strings easily.
The angle of eyes to strings gets lowered with a standard height chair and prevents you from looking down on them.

OK, Victory is mine!
The file card idea works! even though I used my wife's craft paper. I can see the strings much better. The darker the color the better, Im sticking with red.
Funny thing, when I tried using white paper, the strings cast a shadow leaving me with 20 lines to pick from 
BTW Im using a padded piano seat that adjusts. I had to raise my steel's legs to get my knees all the way under the thing. Then of corse the pedals take on a downward angle so ya gotta adjust that, gee wizzzzzzzzz

Alright,
I cut some black leather into the shape of California and not only can I clearly see the string against a black background but I have a spot to rest my sweaty palm. SWEET

Gaylen,
Cut a couple pieces of PVC pipe the length of the raise that fit the small part of the legs , and put them between the pedal board, and the leg clutch. Worked for me. BF
Oops...My bad, you also need pedal rod extenders.
