I've tried it at home. I have one of those Tribo-Tone bars that's the same size as my "Jerry Byrd" bar that I want to try on a gig when I use an overdrive pedal to see if it makes a difference. I don't think I could get used to playing the smaller bar all the time though. |

I use a regular 10 string bar on a 12 string...does that count? I don't even know if they make long bars for 12 string guitars. |

So do I - it never occurred to me to use anything longer. Even the regular bar only covers nine strings. When would you ever want more than about seven? _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Hey Jonny! I had Jim Burdon at Bullet Bars (my fave) make me a beautiful 7/8 bar in a 3-1/4" (10 string) length for use with my 10 string lapsteel. Works great for that and is also fun to use on PSG for a change of pace. Little less sustain than a heavier bar, but good fun on the quick stuff once in a while.

What is the standard length for an 8 string bar?
I use my 7/8" x 3.3125" bar for everything - 6 string, 8 string, 10 string pedal steel and Dobro. |

When I was a beginner I didn't know any better and I was using a lap steel 3/4 bar for awhile. I finally bought a regular 13/16. Now I use a 1" bar on my U-12.
I picked up a 12 string 1" bar at a music store for $25.00
(how could you go wrong). I found the longer bar was harder for me to control, or I was just used to the 10 string.
FWIW I was always told I should fit the bar to my hand not to the guitar. The bottom line is what size is most comfortable and provides the best control.
I play with the tip of the bar not the whole bar. I bought a 1" bar from someone on the forum awhile back that has an insert/plug in the tip that is slightly heavier on the tip end.
For my style of playing the extra weight in the tip gives me more control and a little better sustain. _________________ Zum SD-12 Black, Zum SD-12 Burly Elm Several B-Bender Tele's and a lot of other gear I can't play.

I have a mid-weight Tribo-Tone bar that I use for all the above. The exception is when I play a "really Country" ballad, or "crying" type song, where I use a 12-string BJS. That sound seems to work better with the heavy chrome bar.
Mostly, I use the Tribo-Tone just like Jeff Mead. _________________ RICK ABBOTT
