There are a bunch of youtube clips with Spencer and Steelism. Some nice ones from Live from Music City Roots around 2013 I think.
He was playing a Show-Pro then near as I can tell. I enjoyed watching the PBS special of their segment on Roots. It may be archived somewhere. |

I find myself the opposite, I LIKE steelism but I have a bad feeling about Spencer.
Imagine the white unicorn, a young(Ish) steeler, making music. BUT I don't really like him therefore he doesn't apply to any of the conversations regarding young steelers. He shouldn't anyway because he probably isn a little too old.
And it's not straight country music which is all we mean by "are there any young steelers"
If it don't sound like Paul franklin, I don't care! _________________ Http://www.jonnylam.com

While I was listening to "Cuban Missile/Landlocked Surfer" it occurred to me we may have had it backwards all along....
Steel guitar doesn't sound like country.Country sounds like steel guitar! |

I just think for a small church, and particularly given it's roots, the steel guitar community is remarkably broad and open minded. |
Yes yes. Players are taking the instrument out to all 4 corners. Or full 360 degrees; choose your geometric shape. Same as it ever was. Did the audience who loved Buddy Emmons' playing on Ray Price records even know about Redneck Jazz? Probably not, but steel players were all over it.
I used to take what was said in Rolling Stone as gospel, but it is just words and how a question is phrased and how somebody was feeling about it that day. When your album comes out, you get the chance to speak your mind. Pretty cool.
The music sounds great, and the article is very insightful and well done. |

With the internet and the plethora of choices, variety of means to discover new music, how did I miss Steelism?
Maybe it's the plethora of choices. Or I'm stuck in my old conservative "if it ain't country" ways, or is it because I live in Colorado?
I can't wait to share Steelism with my granddaughter. During her visits since she was three years old, "bath-time" was "steel guitar music time." At age 4 she could recognize Buddy Emmons. Linus and Lucy is one of her favorites.
