Do guitar pickups weaken as they age, in other words do they wear out?

Yes the winded wires can loosen their tension through the years; all depends on the wire used and what machine and who did it...ha.
And you can tell when they are getting loose; is the pickup becomes "micro-phonic"...
You can have it "Re-wounded" or get a new pickup that replicates the original single coil sound...and the answer to who does that is > Jerry Wallace >

Older pickups can weaken in that they can start to lose their magnetic charge. You can have the pickup rewound and recharged if you want to bring it back to what it was when new. I have had Owen Duffy of OC Duff pickups recharge a couple of pickups for me. He's reasonable and does a great job but you should really think about recharging if the pickup works but seems to be lacking.
