 A very early model. to be sure, Ben. Last year, for a time this same store (Pawn/Music) featured a black color EMCI D-10 for approx (if memory serves)
$2 thou, . Wondered if any local swooped that one up. Very good shape, outwardly.. but
they fail to show the mechanicals. Wonder if cables live under the skirt. |

I grew up in LA and I remember that part of downtown being loaded with pawn shops where you could find a mid-50's D-28 for $250. Which was a lot of coin back in 1965.
In junior high and high school, I was friends with James Ellroy. Read his books, his descriptions of Los Angeles in the 50's are totally spot on.

Boy that is in nice condition for a guitar thats more than 50 years old.
I'd be tempted if I'd not spent so much and committed to more already.

I was sweating bullets about this. One of my favorite steelers plays a D8 from this era and I was getting very, very itchy to buy it.

Glad I could save your marriage, I no longer have a wife so now no need to justify my wasting the kids education money any more.
Anyway, they might like working on a garbage truck!  
I should say thanks to Abe for getting and posting those photos of the underside.
That was what did me in and I no longer had the will to resist.
Here are those photos of this beauty;
The chromed wrapped body is long before the MCI steels years later?
Hard to miss one of those pedals as long as your in the right neighborhood, or should I say Wright neighborhood?
Nice design of the fingers to help reduce string breakage.
Need some bling, this one has it in spades...
A littler roughness in the lacquer on the leading edge of the maple, but not enough to want to refinish. Just take care to not cause any more with a nice dust cover.
One thing I liked is that all the cables seem to pull two fingers, then if you look to the left there seems to be a bracket to hook up any extra pull cables that you don't want to use keeping tension on the other pull.

About the rough edges with what looks in the photos like chipped lacquer.
There is an old method used by luthiers and furniture restorers called french polishing.
Basically you use a soft cotton pad (Also known as a Rubber) with a mixture of shellac and alcohol and a tad of oil to rub the finish and build up a new coat of shellac where the lacquer is missing.
With carful work you can touch it up to a point where you'd have to look very close to see the repair. I've had a fair amount of experience doing that so will not be a problem to do without a complete strip down and refinish.
A guitar like this should be preserved as close to original as possible.
Much as I like knee levers, I'd not make any such changes to this instrument.

I'm not sure the date of this photo, I'd guess mid 50's?
Planning to take the photo to Saigon where there are many good artists who can do a nice oil painting of it for my wall.

I thought about that time for the age of the guitar, but not sure.
It's in amazing condition.
I was not aware that some were made in Red Bluff.
Usually go through there on my way south so now it will have more meaning for me.
As for that photo...
Remember those days well, I was 18 months old then.
