I have a question for all you Emmons PP users out there.

Would putting a .013 gauge string on #1 and a .012 gauge on #3 cause the guitar pedal action to be too stiff?

One PP mechanic suggested this would be the case. However, some research I've done here on the Forum suggests that a larger gauge string makes it easier to bring the string up to pitch (with less travel).

I've been using the cryogenic Live Steel Strings which has a .012 (#1) and .011 (#3). However, I'm thinking of changing over to the larger strings for better tone, sustain, and longevity.

Reference Ricky Davis' and Paul Franklin's posts on this subject--string gauges. Both Ricky & Paul use a .013 (#1) and .012 (#3). Ricky uses a .014 (#4) while Paul uses .015 (#4).

I'm considering this changover before having some work done on the guitar (changer reset and adjustment to the levers).

I'd like to hear from anyone who may be using these larger string gauges on their Emmons PPs.

Thanks,

Don

I've used an .013 1st string and .012 3rd string for 30+ years. I break a lot less strings than with lighter gauges

013 .015 .011 .014 .017 .020p .026w .030 .034 .036

This is the standard Nashville set gauges from George L's. I used this set on a P/P Emmons for a few years
'til on Jeff Newman's suggestion, I began using a .012 on string 3 and have been using the same gauges ever since on most of my other 10 string E9th tuned guitars, having let go of the Emmons some 20 yrs. ago. Sad

Had no problems at all with a .012 on my push pull.

My experience has been the same as Tony's concerning the gauges you reference.

I've also been using Live Steel brand of strings for quite a while now. And previously used Jagwire for a good while too...both on my push pull. Both brands used in nickel (non-cryo) strings.
On string #1 I use .013, and split the difference between .011 and .012 on string #3 with .0115. No problems with breakage on either string. Even the 11.5 #3 string only broke once or twice over a few years (but only after a good bit of use).

You should have absolutely no problem, you'll even shorten the travel on those raises

Thanks guys! For you who have been using the larger gauges, was the pedal/lever action affected by the change? Thanks!

Don

I prefer the heavier gauges even further down the line.

Hey Don, I use a 13 on top and have used a 12 for 3rd string and I can't tell any difference in pedals at all. I'm using a 11 now on 3rd just because most sets come that way. But the 12 works fine.
