I got one of these for Christmas 1986 or 7. I saw one on fleabay for $55 and bought it several years ago as a piece of nostalgia. It had a blown speaker and I had a period-correct Scorpion speaker, so I put it in...it would have been the "upgrade" speaker at the time.
What I've discovered is: It's a pretty good steel amp! I took it to practice last week with my Gibson Console Grande, and this week with my Sho~Bud Professional. The tone and power were just perfect. I was really shocked at how good it sounded with the pedal guitar.
What a sweet little amp!
What upgrades would make it even better for steel? I could see having a few of these around.
Does anyone else have good, or bad, experiences with the Studio Pro 50?

If you haven't done so already, take it to a tech and have him do a thorough inspection. It likely needs new power supply caps, and maybe a few other things, due to it's age.
Better safe than sorry.

I used on as the second amp in a stereo steel/keyboard setup. It is really a good steel amp. I did have an M series JBL in mine. It was also good for small gigs/practice.

Actually, it's working very well.
My real question is: Is there a chip set that would make it "better?"
It's not for every situation, but in this case ( amplified stand-up bass, light drums, amplified acoustic guitar) it really did the job!

| Peavey has not offered such as it was not a steel guitar amp. But, I will offer this, I "tried out" several of our amplifiers and reported on my findings about ten years ago and I thought that the Envoy sounded the best to my ears, as far as guitar amplifiers go. |

I picked up this Peavey Encore several years ago. What a beautiful amp at 65 watts with a pair of 6L6 power tubes and three 12ax7 preamp tubes. Nice clean sounds with the steel but whoever designed the lead channel at Peavey must be an AC/DC fan. What a grinding driving tone.
Also, the Peavey LA-400 is very nice for steel guitar especially for a U-12 or C6 |

I just met a really good techie; they are rare where I'm from. I just might have him do a cap-job on it. I can see using it a fair amount. It's not enough for most gigs, but two might be on small to medium size.

The schematic doesn't indicate what type of chips were used; but if U1 & U2 are socketed 4558s, putting in OPA2134s would be an easy improvement. Caveat: U2 does NOT have power supply bypass capacitors, so it would be advisable to put in a 0.1uF ceramic capacitor across IC pins 4 & 8 to keep the faster IC from oscillating. Capacitors C5-C11-C20-C22 are electrolytics; polypropylene replacements would be an improvement. In addition, power supply capacitors C48-C49 could be upgraded to larger values (4,700-6,800uF) for a stiffer low end.
But if it sounds good as is, DON'T FIX IT!!

Over the years I have sent a number of Peavey amps back to Peavey for service - a 400 Series Bass amp, RockMaster rack pre-amp, Encore 110, Bandit 112 etc and their service has always been outstanding. They are my go-to service guys for Peavey stuff.
