Can't afford one so I make do with a 12 string Non-pedal.

I would have a very difficult time having only one steel.
My giging guitar is a Carter Uni-12 and it stays at home setup ready for daily practice.
I have a second Zum SD-12 Uni. That stays at my friends house for weekly rehearsals.
Gig time comes and I pack up the Carter and head to a gig.
Before I had the Carter setting up took a lot of valuable rehearsal time not to mention packing up loading and unloading. If I could afford it I still would not have more than two PSG's.
I have two complete rigs for giging.
Two Tele's
Two Steels
Two amps
Two seats
Two VP's
Two identical pedal boards
Etc...
It never hurts to have a complete backup in case of disaster or theft.
I'm an IT guy for a living and there are three rules.

And a Backup of your backups.

I have three.
I'm currently away working at the Medora Musical. For tyhis job I need one steel set up permanently (for the whole Summer) at the Show. That's my D-10 LeGrande 111.
We have other opportunities to play here, though - a regular spot six nights a week doing the Pitchfork Fondue (right before the show) and sundry sets with various singers from the Musical who'll select songs for their own sets.
For this purpose nothing beats my Zum Encore!!! Light and portable, it's a great sounding guitar and, to be honest, it may be the best steel I've ever owned! It's only fault is that it's not really 'showy' enough for the main stage. The Emmons looks great under the lights with all that gleaming metalwork and its black mica. It shouldn't be important, I know, but appearance IS a factor when with audiences in the 1000-2500 range each night. After all, we dress for the Show and our instruments are a part of the image.
The other guitar is a wonderful SD-10 JCH.
I need three guitars for this contract.
However, I'm beginning to lust after a blond Show-Pro D-10 so, if I ever pull that particular trigger, something - probably the JCH - will have to go.
If I'm at home (or working on a non-steel contract) my Emmons is set up ready to play when the mood takes me. The others languish in their cases.

I like having two, in case an "issue" comes up with one, I have a backup. I only take one guitar to a gig; but, I take two amps and two of everything else...including an extra shirt. (There was that bbq sauce problem one evening.)
I'm thinking I may start wearing a belt and suspenders...

I have 2 D-10's that are gig ready, as well as an S-10. As I get more into C6 the S-10 has taken back seat. There are 3 more S-10's and a D-10 in various stages of rebuilding awaiting my attention. One S-10 is a Sho Bud - the rest are push-pulls. I keep a D-10 set up all the time and take out either the other D-10 or S-10 depending on the set lists. To me the sound of a C6 is worth the extra muscle needed to setup on stage.
I started out with a Sho Bud, but once I got an Emmons I was hooked, although changing a push pull copedent is time consuming. I owned a Mullen for a while, and after working on push pulls the Mullen was a treat to work on.

Naturally I have a Dekley set up on each side of the pond, so I won't have to transport one back and forth a couple of times a year just to keep up the hobby. Those contraptions are heavy, and costly, to transport, but sound and play the way I like.
In addition to those two, I have an MSA S12 and a GFI Ultra that are given roles as "dedicated lab-rats" - for experimentation.
A CarpSteel is my "light and portable" alternative, in case I need one. |

If I had kept all the (pedal) steels I ever owned I would be at 5, there were some nice ones among them too. However, due to circumstances, I now feel glad to have at least one of each - D-10 PSG, D-8 console steel and dobro. If you think about it, with those you can cover an amazing range of musical styles. The remedy for those who might be frustrated for not being able to buy another one - work on your playing, it helps...

Seeing all these pics with multiple gtrs reminds me of something funny that Harry Orlove said to me once...
He told me he was afraid that he'd die and his wife would sell his guitars for what he told her he had paid for them...

I have three D10s.
I keep one by the door for jobs, another set up for practice. I often rotate by which has the freshest strings. |
