I have this lap steel made of ash. It is natural unfinished ash and appears not to be sealed even. I want to remove the finger smudges along the edge of the fretboard per pic.

Any suggestions short of sanding?

Since it's bare wood, I don't want to use something that will soak into it and leave a stain after drying.

I read that maybe white vinegar or white spirits. Perhaps VM&P naphtha. Anybody know? Thanks.

If the smudges won't buff out you may want to consider this advice from Tom Pettingill....."If the marks are into the finish too much, you can use some of Birchwood Caseys Stock and Sheen conditioner to rub them out followed up with their wax."

This advice from Tom refers to smudges in Tru-Oil finish....so I'm not sure how much help this will be to you.

Thanks for your reply Stephen. It's bare wood...no finish at all far as I can tell. I'm afraid buffing would just exacerbate the problem. I think I need a solvent that will lift out the dirt etc. Thanks.

Naphta - aka Lighter fluid , will not Raise the Grain as much as DeNatured will.
Less Stringent too.

Thanks for the tips George et al. I'll be stepping out tomorrow...may pick up one of these. It's not that bad really, but I'm considering putting some finish on the guitar and I don't want to lock in those smudges.
