I would like to try E7th tuning to get that sacred steel and blues sound and am looking for recommendations on which steel to purchase. An eight string that can growl and sing with legs. Thanks! |

Do it in any 6th because they don't chord much and more importantly 8 string 6th tuning is actually a m7 tuning.
eg. ACEGACEG - C6th 8 string = Am7
ALSO
Sacred steel plays pentatonic Major and Minor back and forth 99% of the time while adding the blues scale notes for the transition between the two. So no better tuning than a 6th tuning for that. All straight bar. I also think AJ Ghent uses a 6th tuning I think E6th check him out.
But be warned pentatonic scales are addictive and can pigeon hole your playing for years or life cause they sound so good. I literally avoid them as much as possible now and sprinkles them on like spice. _________________ Stefan

I would say that your technique and approach to the music makes a whole lot more of a difference than the make of the guitar.
Everyone's idea of that ideal sound is different and so many factors are involved in the gear alone ... guitar, pickup, amp, effects ... that's it's hard to offer any meaningful recommendations.
All that said, Valco/Nationals made still-affordable 8-strings with legs that sound great for bluesier music. Jason Lollar also makes a Valco pickup that you could add to any guitar for a sound that may be in the ballpark of what you're seeking.
There are some demos here of Eastwoods Airline reissue:

What George said, plus Guitars don't growl, the Amp you plug it into does that.

Wholeheartedly agree.
I would also suggest that you obtain a copy of this album:
Learn the Jesse Ed Davis part to Statesboro Blues note-for-note, and you'll be well on your way. Worked out okay for Duane Allman.
Then, purchase a Little Walter or Sonny Boy Williamson compilation and learn the mouth organ lines note-for-note.
Plus, listen to as much Freddie Roulette as you can. |
