This record is fabulous! Fresh and innovative treatments of this material. Very "listenable", and the musicianship is stellar all-around. Mixes are great! Warm, clear, and spacious.
I would be very interested to know about the instruments and amplification used, as well as the recording chain(s).
Great job Mike! I know you must be very proud.

We had a great engineer, Paul Wickliffe, who really knows his stuff. When it comes to recording acoustic jazz, it is remarkable what he can do in a small studio. He knows his mics and his gear very well. The piano was a Steinway that belonged to Keith Jarrett at one time. Also, there was a Hammond (not a B-3, I forget the model) and Leslie.
My Clinesmith cast aluminum 8 string was the only steel I used on the recording. Some tracks were straight into a 100W Twin Reverb with JBLs and no effects except a little reverb from the amp, some used FuzzFace, and for modulation effects I used my Digitech RP1000. That's it. We used an old Altec Birdcage mic and an AKG C414-XLS. No volume pedal.
The tracks were all recorded live, except Ask Me Now, which was recorded in my home studio with me playing everything except vibes and snare. I used a little Fender Bronco (solid state) modded with a JBL 10".

By the way do you remember that Fender Dual Professional you sold me a few years back? I call her "Ole Yeller". Still going strong. I've used it on quite a few recordings when I've needed that kind of vibe.

Yes, I remember! Perfect name! Did you have the pickup rewound?
I should also add that I had to do some overdubbing, but I was the only one. Hey, it's my record after all, right? Gotta be able to live with it. But all the band tracks were complete live takes that we did in two days.

For sure! I was directing traffic and listening while we recorded, and as anyone knows, that can really take your focus off playing 100%. I did a few rehearsals with bass and drums, and then we did one rehearsal with piano the week before, but these are guys I have close musical relationships with, so there were discussions.

Reminds me of some sessions I've done where I was engineer, co-producer, and steel player simultaneously. The Doug Sahm record comes to mind. I think I kept maybe 50% of the steel I laid down while we were tracking.

I can't imagine.
I became attached to Mike's demos, having all the parts he's hearing, and the raw freshness that comes first.
So it's a thrill to hear the ideas translated by really good players. We all know what it's like to play with yourself.
A handful of players interpreting parts and exceeding them at the same time...
yeah, you want an engineer, and it was the quality of production that swayed me over to the album. It's a milestone.
As much as I dug the original tracks, an album has to have a listenability to give it legs, and this is easy to listen to without being 'easy listening.'

Fantastic record!
So glad it is on Spotify, will send it to some friends this way! Bought it on cd, then had to use a few tricks to get it to play on my iPhone..
