Love my Musicmaster Bass amp. Nothing sweeter than 6V6s. One 12AX7, solid-state rectifier, 12 watts and a little over 20 pounds. Pretty crappy as a bass amp with the stock speaker, but awesome for lap steel.
These things used to be sleepers, but the word is slowly seeping out. Consequently, the prices seem to be on the rise. |

This amp was made with 2-6V6 power tubes ....Another version of this amp came with other power tubes that slip my mind at this time ...Is this amp a 6V6 amp ? ..Thanks ...Jim

That's the tube chart for a Champ.
The MMB with 6AQ5 power tubes is one of the earlier models. The later ones have 6V6s. They were marketed from 1970 to 1982.

Perhaps it came off the line on a Monday morning or a Friday afternoon.
Also, it's a point worth noting that during the early '70s Columbia was well into the process of implementing profound changes in the established way of doing things in Fullerton, and a more adversarial relationship developed between the employees and management. Union mischief, perhaps?
The wrong label certainly won't have any effect on the amps performance. It's more of a curiosity than anything else. In fact, there are dealers who will exploit the situation by calling it a "factory error" and inflating the price accordingly. |

| I had one of these, kinda. When I first started learning steel, a few years ago, I traded for an MMB. I couldn't figure out why mine was different from every example I saw online. I knew absolutely nothing about amps. Slowly, I learned that in the past, people liked to put Champ amps in MMB cabs, so they had a Champ with a 12". What I had was the scraps of such an endeavor. An MMB amp in a champ cab. Reading online about the tubes I needed was the first thing to make me ask questions. I sold it with an honest representation of what it was. I recently replaced it with a silverface Champ. It may be a trick of the memory, but I wish I had the MMB back, instead. |

That trick would work with a Vibro Champ, too. All three have 17" chassis. These amps are all over 30 years old; some are pushing 50. All had long production runs with only minor changes. Lots of opportunity for mixing and matching between then and now. |
