Hello everybody!
I find myself a little bit struggling with accurate tuning with my steel even with a tuner.
Back in the days i was with Bucky Baxter, GREAT player and he showed me a method tuning with overtones, with hearing the sound waves.
It was great, BUT it was a long time ago and i just didnt understood it completely.
anyone can explain a little bit?

but i got a little confused in this part:
Open Strings:
String 8: Tune the E to a tuner or another ins. (Uni)
String 4: Tune the high E to the low E (Oct)
String 10: Tune the low B to the low E (5th)
String 5: Tune the high B to the low B (Oct)
String 6: Tune the low G# to the low E (3rd)
String 3: Tune the high G# to the low G# (Oct)
String 7: Tune the low F# to the low B (5th)
String 1: Tune the high F# to the low F# (Oct)
String 2: Tune the high D# to the high G# (5th)
String 9: Tune the low D to the low F# (3rd)
I tuned the 8 string and the 4 string,
but i didnt understood how to tune the 10 string? does it mean the 5th fret on the 10 string? it does not sound the same..

You tune the "beats" out between the low E and the low B.
Al Brisco of Steel Guitars Canada has a DVD that demonstrates this type of tuning that eliminates the beats between chord groups. It is called the "Tuning Tutorial for Pedal Steel Guitar, E9 Standard Tuning".
The DVD is $25, but I think you have to order $40 minimum, so maybe some of the other DVDs he has may interest you. You can see it here:

I have found it helpful to add some distortion to hear the beats better, but that is just me.

About 2 or 3 years ago, there was a post on the Forum by someone who had what seemed to be a novel way to tune the steel using a strobe tuner, and then enter your own presets for your own axe. It wasn't using the existing Peterson presets.
Do any of you recall who posted that, or could point me toward that thread? I finally have the time to mess with it.
