I just love this song. And I just love Paul Franklin's playing. There is a lick he does that is quite common, it's used in many songs by other players too and I don't know who was the first.

I have tried and tried to figure it out but I just can't. I'm stuck. I'm sure many of you know it, can you help me? It's in the first verse measure 6-7 (at 0:30).

I'm also struggling with the intro, but I think I have it... Next week on Saturday I will play this song with my band on a local gig here in Västerås, Sweden. It's club for old cars, mostly american cars, and they love these songs.

Anyone knows the history of this lick?

Regards,
Wolfgang

Say at the 10th fret hit string 5 Let ring and slide back to 8th fret and add "A" pedal and hit strings 3 and 4 then string 5 and block 3 and 4 but let 5 ring, slide back up to the 10th fret and repeat.

Check out Joseph Barcus on You Tube. He breaks down the original licks.

And for those who like to see it written, I tabbed that lick (or one very similar to it) in this old thread:

The lick you are asking about at 0:30 would probably be classified as a Ralph Mooney lick. Ralph played steel on early Merle and Buck songs. Check out the album Corn Pickin' and Slick Slidin' by James Burton And Ralph Mooney.

Mickey Adams did a video showing that lick a while ago:

Lick #2 at 1:18. Nice clear demo.

I think it works just as well using the same move on strings 5,4,3 or strings 6,4,3.
