Hey guys here is a link to his instrumentalist Altered Ego, Did he experiment with different pedals to get this tone, It almost sounds like he was going for the Allan Holdsworth thin there a little.

Quentin, it sounds (to me) like Hal used an Eventide Harmonizer on his steel for "Altered Ego". Hal was a great player, and a heck of a nice guy to boot! That is one of my favorite instrumentals. |

Thanks Roy!
Yes it sounds very sutle and hard to pick out but I knew there was something a little extra in there. I was given this record to me by a friends dad who was clearing out his old record collection. I had no idea what I was in for with this great album. I recently bought it on CD along with some others from Mattysvision. Even back in His young days on the Wilburn brothers he was playing some really cool outside bluesy type stuff on the Shobud. Great player one of my very favorites |

IIRC, Hal was using an altered E tuning to get more C6 type of jazz voicings, maybe more keyboard like? Most likely used on the "Altered Ego" tune and "All the Things You Are". |

Cand anyone tell me who or what inspired Hal to record "Send in the clowns"?
I know that Ted Greene recorded it, did he inspire Hals playing? |

Both Hal and Weldon Myrick recorded Send in the Clowns at about the same time. Perhaps it came from Grand Ole Opry work, where they were on staff. Hal's tuning is in the Winnie Winston book. |

John did Hal have the E13 tunning on his front neck and C6 on the back or how was his guitar setup? If anyone has any good Hal stories please insert |

thanks for posting Quenton! I have a couple memories connected to the altered ego Lp. I worked in Hermitage tn. years ago at a grocery store and met Hal there. I mentioned I liked his altered ego LP, He thought about it a while and said,Oh yeah, like he forgot he recorded it! I knew of Bob Mater the drummer and he was a monster! |

Wait a minute... you mean it was his "Altered E"-Go-To tuning...? Hmmmm... Never dawned on me before... _________________ www.JimCohen.com

When you use the term 'most likely' are you speculating or do you know Hal was using an altered tuning on these two songs? |

According to Winnie's book, as far back as 1975 Hal was using an E6th tuning on his back neck |

I got to jam with Hal for about 3 hours at Jack Heerns home. My changer endplate was about 6†from his keyhead endplate. He was very kind! One of my favorite memories.
