Some more photos of my new love....
She arrived yesterday and I've divided my time between playing it and just sitting and looking at it. Not sure which is better.
Modern Art Photo!
The Promat has been a little lonely since yesterday...
But my sweetheart seem to know she'll always be really the first lady in this house
I get a kick out of seeing my hands reflected as I'm playing.
Seeing them from the guitars point of view...
Gotta admit, those are nice PJ's that I never got out of today
Time to say good night, well maybe I'll sneak downstairs for a little caress in the middle of the night.

|
|
After a week of playing this guitar I've formed some thoughts about it and the tuning it had.
I had Mullen put this copedent on the guitar with some things I wanted to try out, but once I had it, it was not what I had in mind and imagined it would do;
Turned out that using pedals 1&2 together with the first pedal lowering the 3rd string to F# was bad for a couple of reasons.
.1. The pedal travel was way too long on that string the same as when I tried it on my Star Guitar.
.2. That change with pedal, while it did give me a straight A6th from string 10 to string 3 was not very useful.
However, it would not be normal to need that F# on top and I lost the high octave A note.
Besides that, if I do need the F# I only need to grab the 1st string and I'd still have the high A octave on string #3.
Next I was really missing the unison pedal that pulls the 1st & 2nd string up to G# & E for unisons with Strings #3 & #4.
Pedal 4 duplicating the 3rd E9th pedal was kind of okay, but I've had that on my RKR since 1978 and love it there. so the AB pedals with that give the same as the BC E9th pedals. Just a waste of a good pedal.
Pedal 5 is a good 6th style change, but I know I'd hardly ever use it.
The short story is I have now gone to this more simple copedent and like it much better;
Fifth pedal now gives me my Unisons on strings 1&2 and pedal 1 dropping the 6th string G# to F# as well as the 3rd string to G for chord runs up and down the neck.
That G# to F# is kind of like the E9th A pedal, but in the open E.
Another nice deal with that is if you play strings 4,5 & 6 and then engage the first pedal and RKL it takes you from E to another nice B7.
Now pedals 2&3 are the basic E9th AB and if I include the RKR it becomes E9th Pedals B&C, but allows more decending note runs.
Pedals 3&4 gives me a nice Open A6th all the way across the 10 strings with most knee levers working well with that. RKR raising the string 7 to G turns the A6th into A7.
LKV is real nice for several things. Making a pedals down chord turn into a minor with the B to Bb.
It also is nice on strings 3&4 going up and down the neck getting major and minor harmony where needed for the right scale.
And then strings 2,3,4&5 with that LKV become a real nice and useful diminished chord.
Last let me say the guitar is very easy to change tunings on and it is very comfortable to play. Fits my body like a glove with every pedal and knee lever in the perfect place to play with very little body contortions or effort .
Tone with the Mullen 21k pickup is very satisfying and good, though not quite as killer as my Promat D-10 PP guitar.
I am considering a change to a Telonics 409 pickup.
Last is that I think this is such a fine instrument it will improve my playing.
Worth every penny. Mike and the crew at Mullen are top notch folks. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

That green top chrome front Mullen is mine.
Sure enough, I had it on a gig and a microphone stand was knocked over and it scratched the front of the steel. It left about a 1.5" scratch in the center of the chrome front.
All I could think of to conceal the scratch was automotive pin striping.

That is real nice Tim.
And the fix for the scratch looks good to me.
Sure makes me cringe, the idea that could happen to mine also.
I bought a Promat D-10 a couple of months back from Damir.
Nice guitar with killer tone, but I'm kind of useless on the C6th and am coming to the conclusion that I am just not a PP guitar guy.
Maybe will hold it a while and sell it later.
So I wonder how many of us have these polished silver steels?
I thought I had an original idea, oh well! _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

Now I have been calling it her, but no name yet.
Does that make me a bad bad boy?
BTW, Micky your DVD came in real handy when I was changing this new Mullen around. Left the DVD overseas, but had watched it twice so remembered most of the important things. Changing the copedent went quickly and got real nice action.
I will say the main AB pedals set up at the company seem to operate a shade too quickly for me.
Just barely touching them starts the change before I want it, (You know like when your just hovering over them and just touch it a hair it starts pulling the string out of tune) so I may work a little more slack into those two pedals.
Other than that, what a perfect feel. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

Thanks Ron,
Maybe my idea, but the credit goes to the Mullen crew.
They turned my dream into a PSG.
As for her name, She is silver and gold so I'm thinking the last name should have "Gold" in it. Got any ideas on that?
Or maybe just Miss Sylvia Mullen? _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html
