A lot of times when a celebrity gets a newer instrument it is because the old one is getting issues or getting worn out.
Then the seller says "Owned by" and puts a premium price on it.

I had rather have one owned by an old man who seldom
played it.

I see the point you're trying to make. But most celebrities get at least one new one a year. Plus, most own several other guitars. In the old days one builder complained to me about a player who thought he should get 4 new ones per year.

Some get beat up out on the road. But most take pretty good care of them. As for wearing one out. It would take a lot of hours of playing time and many years to wear out most any quality brand I can think of.

As for paying more. I'd give a little more for one that belongs to one of my idols. If, it came directly from him.
But that's just me.

I'm with Paul. I've seen some of the Pro's guitars and most that I've seen have been "well played".

The only owner of a guitar I care about is me.
I'm kind of self centered that way..... Smile

I pay zero attention to what any of the very best and well-known pros play. I can only guess at the nature of the deals that are struck that end in a name player suddenly jumping ship and going with another brand.

It's all smoke-and-mirrors. There's no such thing as a hard-to-play steel guitar these days and the superstars play anything with such consummate ease and flair that it's not a fair fight.

I, too, know of at least one builder who had to draw the line with 'free guitars' - when did Jordan Spieth last buy a golf ball?

Perhaps, back in the day when Sho~Bud and MSA were distributed by Gretsch, Baldwin, Norlin, et al. and churning out many hundreds of guitars, there might have been "freebies," but nowadays it's the rare builder that gives away a guitar; it simply is too expensive to do so.

Either the player pays cost, or wholesale/dealer price, or the guitar is a loaner for promotion, to be given back to the builder, or eventually paid for.
