What's the difference (electronically) between a keyboard player's expression pedal and a steel player's volume pedal? Can a volume pedal be used as an expression pedal, and vice versa?

Never tell a studio engineer it's a volume pedal! Tell him it's an expression pedal, like on a Hammond organ.

An expression pedal is a single cable pedal used to control the internal volume circuitry in a keyboard.

It normally still has a pot in it, but is wired to one cable with 2 or 3 wires in the cable.

Here is an example...

This schematic is spot on - linear pot, BUT I did talk to the guys at Strymon and they said they like higher pot values for their pedals, I recall them saying maybe 100k to 1M is good for their stuff. My wife has an expression pedal hooked up to her El Capistan to control the feedback. It's simply a modded volume pedal with a linear pot and a 1k resistor and a single TRS jack instead of an IN and OUT jack.

You can take a volume pedal and connect a TRS Y'cable. The audio taper may or may no be a good thing depending on what you're controlling.

That 1k resistor is not critical but is a good idea.

And to kind of answer your question - generally these days, an expression pedal is tied to a circuit that will be reading the changing values on both sides of the wiper and then converting that analog info to digital to tell a processor to do a certain designated function in the digital realm.

It's linear taper instead of audio, then?

Do they all have pots, or do some use active electronics, light beams, etc.?

The Boss FV500 can function as both a volume pedal or expression pedal. I might use the expression aspect of the pedal to control the value of one of the knobs on a Moogerfooger pedal, for instance, or connected to an EH Ring Modulator, it can serve as a whammy pedal. There are many uses for an expression pedal granted your effects allow that kind of control.

I once turned an Ernie Ball pedal into an expression pedal (CV, control voltage) with some mods. It wasn't great, though.

B0b, there are some that use electronic circuitry rather than a pot. The Electro Harmonix Next Step Expression Pedal is one such example.
