On my Emmons Legrande on which I have stock single coil pickups (18 - 19K), I noticed my C6 pickup losing it's high, presence tone, while my E9th pickup held it's good tone as usual. I tried all combinations of the tone switches (made sure they weren't half way, etc.), and everything seemed fine that way. There's tone there, but it's very dull and woofy.

Also, there were no broken solders anywhere, and no wires unattached.

The pickup has been seated at the same location all this time (height-wise from the strings).

Can a pickup "go bad"?

Forgive my ignorance of not knowing electronics as well as I should. Never had this happen before.

yes pickups can drop out and do other crazy things as well, just by sitting there !

I didn't go to Guitar Pickup College so I can't tell you why ! I have a few in the parts box that experience odd stuff.

A quick test can reveal if it's good or bad, but you need another pup, probably ANY pup. Wire in the test pup with real long wires ,( remove the leads of the suspect bad pup) while playing HOLD the wired pup OVER the top of strings at the appropriate distance from the strings, whats it sound like, good, better, worse, same ?

I have a mid 90's Legrande II, the C6th pup on it's own sounded ok, maybe a bit thin, but when it was used at the same time as the E9th, ( center position) the whole thing went south, E9th and C6th. A new PUP fixed it.
