Topic: Jerry Byrd used half wound strings |

Jerry saw a lot of changes with kinds strings/gauges that were available in his lifetime.
At the end of his career, I know he used half wound strings. Probably full round strings were a little too mellow and standard stringscreated too much extra noise.

| I believe you may mean semi-flat strings. There are the Scotty's strings that I use, which are semi-flat SIT brand...Don't really know what brand JB used though, but maybe Scotty's, since he ans Scotty were good friends... |

| When I use regular round wound string they flatten out over time. Do the semi-flat strings hold up better than regular wound? |

I'm surprised more people don't use ground wounds.
Frenchy's are flattened; could be some extra bonding with the core goes into the process.
I used them on my lapsteel and everything else since. |

In the 50s, he used identically gauged Black Diamond strings for his first three strings which made his string changes even more subtle than normal - and Byrd was a technician beyond compare even without that. The things you learn on the forum! This year marks 20 years for me on the SGF. Where did 20 years go?

Andy: Could you shed any more light on JB's string gauge choices? Very interesting. In his method he recommends different gauges for those three strings. Is there any particular reason why he used the same gauges?

When searching the older years of the forum postings it's important to know that b0b had a server crash that wiped out the first few years of info. I don't recall exactly what year this occurred but it was after 2002.
This is probably the source though there may be other posts that corroborate what Ray says ...
