The Zoom R16 or R24 are fine units and they'll definitely get the job done.
Regarding the use of an interface and latency:

Newer interfaces have software mixers that offer zero latency for recording.
I use a Focusrite Pro 40 which has this type of software mixer.

I know there are other interfaces that offer this type of solution to deal with latency.
Some Presonus units do this.

There are plenty of choices for recording set ups these days.
It all comes down to personal preference and budget.

And I would agree, I have been using two different PCI BUS MAudio interfaces with two different versions of Pro Tools on TWO "dedicated" PC's ( XP and WIN7) with no latency for well over 7 years. Well, make that no "audible" Latency, there is always SOME but whether we can detect it or always the question.

Many of the current versions of DAW's allow for very selective "buffer" sizes which along with a quality interface produce zero or "non audible" latency.

I believe years back Latency along with various interfaces was indeed a nag, but these days both the DAW guys and the interface guys got their act together !

Certainly what Rick says above is correct, our process and gear is based on personal preference and it's always the end result that matters. If latency was still an issue in home or pro studios today, with current offerings, we would all still be using our Boss BR-8's ! Smile Of which I still have mine and can't part with it ! Laughing
