Why oh why does one take a perfectly great D10 pedal steel guitar and "Hack" it up into a SD 10??????????
All in the name of 10 lbs. lighter or less??????
Why not sell it and buy what you want????
I wonder how many FABULOUS steel guitars have been destroyed this way?????
I am probably riding this topic to death...?... I really don't care, if I save only one GREAT steel from this type of assassination, it will be worth it!!!!!!

I totally agree with you Neil, don't destroy a D-10 of any kind to make a S-10. Should be against the law, LOL

It seems like here of late there is more demand for a SD-10 (not a S-10) than a D-10. There aren't a lot of new players who care to devote their time to the C6th tuning. I have an old beat up Emmons p/p that I hope to restore and my plans are to restore it as an SD-10.
Throw rocks if you want to.  |

I say if you can't afford to sell and or trade:
Take the extra pedals off the rack, take the strings off the bottom neck, put a one inch thick black foam pad over it with black tape. Or something along those lines......don't destroy it.

I agree. But the player might not be able to be without a guitar for any length of time. After he finally sells it, he has the time before he sees a used guitar he wants, or the wait time for a new guitar. If it's his only guitar and he gigs, that might not be an option.
Although I can hardly carry my Carter D10 anymore, I would never butcher my D10. I would like to switch to an S12 uni, but don't have the time to sell mine and wait to find a guitar I want. I gig too much.

That would only lighten it up a little. You still have the weight of the undercarriage parts, changer and any housing, key head and tuning pegs. Although these could all be reinstalled later.
Please don't take my remarks as me condoning removal of the rear neck. I am against it.

I regard all musical instruments as sacred and I cannot bear to see them harmed, in the same way that many people care about animals.
On the other hand there are those who just regard them as stuff, either useful or useless. The topic will ride on.

OK.........strip it ALL off. But at least KEEP all the parts in a box to give to the person you sell it to so some day it may "Live" again!!!

I see the same thing with old cars. If it's some POS rotting in a field, do whatever you want to it. But when someone takes a nice original Corvette and updates this, that and the other thing, I cringe.
That said, whether it's a steel or a car, it is personal property. I support the right of the owner to do whatever he/she wants, no matter how strongly I disapprove. |

Maybe they just like that guitar? Could be they just dig the sound and feel of it, and they don't want to have to go on an internet safari to find something similar, and deal with griping buyers, flippers, and shipping companies that may damage the instrument. Lastly, maybe the guitar has some emotional value or career significance, and they can't bear to part with it...just yet. At any rate, it's their guitar, and y'all should just get over it. (That's my opinion.)

what I don't get is people that say "I just don't play the C6th neck."
That's like a drummer saying, "nah man, I don't play the cymbals, or the toms, just bass/top hat/snare"
I enjoy the C6th neck more so that the E9th.
I just don't see why one would be drawn to an instrument as limitless as the pedal steel and then limit themselves. |

Okay, they're not Stradivarius violins, but they're limited production, usually high quality musical instruments. And almost all of them are capable of surviving almost everybody on this forum. So in a sense, I don't think I'm just the owner of my Zum Hybrid, I'm also its custodian.
I wouldn't buy a guitar that had been stripped, and I certainly wouldn't defile one.
But, as clearly stated above, it's your guitar, and you can do whatever the hell you want. |

Yes, they are "our" guitars......but in the grand scheme of things.....for a very short time they are ours!!!
Well.....I guess a guy could be buried with them???
Or.......Or, burn the guitars and mix them with your ashes?

Again, I can't see any reason what so ever to make a single neck out of a D-10, especially and old Emmons, Erv, LOL. If you all don't want the C6th, get you SD-10, if you don't like the SD-10, get an S-10, if you don't like 10 strings, get you an 8 string. Just don't destroy a good D-10 from it's original. This doesn't pertain to junk guitars that aren't worth anything anyway. JMHO

My situation and opinion is exactly what Donny said.
How is it "hacking" and "destroying" a guitar to unbolt/unscrew some parts? I could turn mine back into a D10 in three hours with no sign it had ever been set up as an SD10. |
