I saw Toms blackface super with JBL 15 on another thread, and Im wondering if anyone knew if he had changed the output transformer to match the speaker impedence, or more likely was it the stock 2 ohm output, into a 4 ohm JBL.
As I have both, I was going to give it a try. |

I'd bet the transformer was changed. I think the guys over at Fender were really on top of Tom's amps back then. It's been so long now, but back in the early 2000's, my wife and I gave Tom and Rolene a visit in Branson, and Tom sent us home with his "Together Again" (once a Tweed Bassman) amp because it wasn't working right and needed some help.
Tom said that Leo and his guys had done a few things to that amp a few times, including converting to a single 15" speaker and I'm pretty sure that included a 4-ohm transformer, removing the tweed and tolexing it in black, and somebody there added a spring reverb circuit to it at some point, (but that was very problematic in that amp, was implemented in an odd and questionable manner that proved prone to failures) I took photos and notes on the special amp, but of course, now I can't find that stuff.
Driving home, we kept looking in the back seat at the amp, and I can't tell you how many times one of us would blurt out "Together... again..."

Thats what I wanted to know, thanks.
Really great story , I can only imagine how cool that was.
Again, thanks for sharing that.
Im thinking the Super with a 4 ohm OT and the 15" JBL should sound great. Apparently so did Tom. |
