If it's just dull and not scratched, I use Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish.
If it's scratched, a wheel and red jeweler's rouge.

Simichrome, which is slightly abrasive, has been used by most Steel Guitar builders for years on light surface scratches. Harley Davidson dealers sell the exact same thing under the Harley Davidson name (they used to sell Simichrome but apparently stopped since the Harley branded came out).

MAAS, sold at some places that sell "as seen on TV" items appears to also be identical to Simichrome. I've had some MAAS and it worked exactly like Simichrome.

The Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish is non abrasive and won't take out any minor surface scratches.

Hit it with Simichrome (or equivalent) and then finish with Mother's. I had the fretboards replaced about 6 or 7 years ago on my Franklin. That is what Mr Franklin used on the aluminum necks - simichrome then Mother's to take out some surface scratches before installing the new fretboards.

I've use Simichrome and it really makes them look like new. I rub a thin coat on the end plate and use an electric drill with a buffing wheel.

Billy Knowles turned me on to Liquid Blue Magic.

It's very similar to Mother's Mag.

California Custom. I've tried everything, and it's the best and easiest. Fastest too.

4 or 5 minutes later. No hard rubbing required.

Found at most truck supply shops.

Simichrome is good if you have very light scratching. Elbow grease required though! If your aluminum has oxidized gray, the CC Aluminum Deoxidizer works great with the Purple Polish. Just wipe it on, and let it dry. Then wipe on the Purple Polish right over it. Wipe of with soft clean cloth. You're done. No rubbing!

I like Mr. Billings suggestion. He has lots of practical experience. We share respect for a late friend, a man who quoted an old cowboy proverb about EXPERIENCE.

John, please tell me more about the CC Purple Polish. Isn't it inevitable that the outer aluminum layer will oxidize? Does it protect the aluminum, or slow the oxidation?

It will always oxidize. James liked to use Mother's wax after polishing. That helps.
