Thanks to Ernie Renn for turning me on to yet another gem from the Marcel Parijs YouTube collection of Buddy’s performance at the 2007 ISGC, this time Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name.â€
I’ll be the first to say this probably isn’t the way Buddy did it. In fact, Buddy’s last copedent has his E9 second string lowers on 2 different knees – so my transcription wouldn’t work. I hear that signature half-tone grace note raise he typically uses on the 4th (combined with the 3rd) string in the second measure – but I don’t see (thanks for the vid, Marcel!) him swinging a full five frets down to get it.
So even if he didn’t use both of the second string lowers at the 10th fret on one knee, he caused me to learn something new on the guitar that I hadn’t seen before in 30 years of tinkering: using RKR as a raise. Amazing – thanks, Buddy!

I'm looking at Buddy's hand positioning going from the second bar to the third: He stays at the same fret. Leading me to believe it's the same lick that was played at the 13th fret repeated at the 8th... IMHO...

I was just so dumfounded to find a new position for that lick that I had to use it. |
