That is so excellent, Susan! No one deserves it more.
Another really interesting thing is seeing the embrace of Mary Halvorson as critic's favorite for guitar. She has definitely stretched the boundaries in her playing, sound and compositions, and challenges the perception of what guitar is in contemporary music. Much like yourself. _________________ http://www.steelinstruction.com/

Hey, that's great, Susan. Mazel tov!
(I found it curious, btw, that they divided saxophone up into 4 categories (sop, alto, ten, bari) but then lumped violin and viola together...) _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Thank you John, Bob, Mike, Charlie, Jim, and Jim. "Best of" lists like that are often specious at best and, at times, in a world of so much good music, little more than a popularity contest - unless, of course, your name makes that list (then everything changes). I don't kid myself that as a musician I am on the level of all those others, but I do hope that, outside of m fevered brain, the music has some validity, and it's nice to get a little recognition once in a while. Also, it's nice to know that people who write about music are listening.
Mike, you're right about Mary Halvorson, and she deserves every one of her accolades. I've seen up close how she works. She writes 8-piece scores on airplanes, and as a daily routine, practices, goes to the gym, rehearses with one of the many bands she plays in, and then plays a gig either in NY or on tour (which she does extensively). She has one of those once-in-a-generation minds for composition and improvisation. The more I play her music, the more I see how brilliantly mathematic her arrangements are.
Jim Cohen, I don't know about the violin/viola thing. Maybe one day in the future they'll have separate pedal steel, non-pedal, and resonator categories. _________________ www.susanalcorn.net
