Got to see Susan Alcorn last night, playing solo PSG in Toronto. Great playing and musicianship & stylistically she is all over the map, a real treat. |

I'm fascinated by the subtle differences in English usage from country to country. I know what a fine musician Susan is so it's clear what Jim means, but "all over the map" has a quite other meaning over here, like stylistically it didn't hang together at all! I meant it as a compliment. I don't think it is so much linguistic as conceptual. Another way of putting it is she shows a fine disregard for generic boundaries. To me, that's a good thing. Others might prefer, umm, walls. |

When I was young I saw musical styles as a row of back yards but now they seem more of an open space. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

It must have been great to see Susan on this solo run. She plays at such a high level of expression, using the entire range of the instrument and such a wide palette of colors. She understands the instrument so deeply: the tradition as well as the possibilities. The chops it takes to pull it off, I can't even imagine. _________________ http://www.steelinstruction.com/

Susan is a true genius, and the unchallenged leader among the avant-garde section of our community.
She has been playing her unique style of music for over 25 years. It's good that she is finally receiving the recognition she deserves.
I'm honored to call her a friend. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Wow, thanks Jim, Mike, Billy and Mike! But . . . I don't really think of myself as "avant-garde" - I just play the music I like, what moves me, and hopefully say something with it that maybe words can't express. For pedal steel guitarists really pushing the envelope, I think of Chas Smith and Bob Hoffnar - both, to my ears, redefine what a "note" is and what tonality is in its deepest essence. Their music is beautiful and profound.
Also, sad to say, knowing a few geniuses, I know that I am not one. While I hope that the music I make has some worth, compared to an awful lot of people, I'm a bit slow - maybe I'm a tortoise.
Larry, I'm not, to my knowledge, related to anyone named Steve Alcorn. _________________ www.susanalcorn.net

Spoken like a true genius (I mean tortoise), praising those she emulates. People who are going where no one has gone before
are a small lot, and I can't imagine life without players who push those limits, looking for the soul of the note.
I think avant-garde is something like 'out front.' You may have to accept the label, since your music isn't 'out back,' to my ears.
