Calvin Cooke dazzles the audience with his arrangement of the "Jewell Praise Jam."
In 2011 as part of the Folk Alliance outreach program, Sacred Steel tradition bearers were invited to give a workshop and performance for students and teachers at Memphis Stax Academy.

No disrespect intended for any of the other sacred steelers, but I flat out love listening to Calvin Cooke play. I love the thick tone he gets out of his little yellow Fender, I love the economy and tastefulness of his phrasing, and I dig the cool, delicately-precise way that he glides from the open root to the barred M3rd on his bass lines. He may not be the flashiest, but he's always been the coolest sacred steeler in my book.
Would love to see him in person one day!
Thanks for posting... |

Calvin Cooke plays at a church less than an hour from where I live? And here I am without a Christmas present for you 😆 Seriously, thanks for the heads-up Nicholas! |

I'll PM you the church address, he plays most of the Sunday's and if he's not there, then the nephew of Calvin and Lonnie Bennett will be playing. |

What an honor! Stax has quite a legacy. To be involved with them is something very special. |
